This article explains about the S/P ratio. At very low ambient light levels this ratio indicates the maximum gain in efficiency one can obtain just by using different receptors in the human eye.
The teaser image shows the spectrum of the light of a streetlight, and also the two human eye sensitivity curves; the daytime (red) curve lower in sensitivity than the nighttime (black).
Illumination, expressed in lux, is being measured frequently. There are a number of norms that give recommended values for lux at dif ferent workspots, roads etc. Final customers seeking installers for lighting, can require these norms to be met. Measurements are normally done with luxmeters, but not all give the correct readings.
This article explains the measurement technique of two meters that both measure lux and therefore could be used to verify a lighting installation. However both do it on its own way and depending on the spectrum of the light of the lighting installation, each type of lux meters give significant different results.
The cause for this is also explained and the article concluded with recommendations.
A close look at the Color Rendering Index (CRI, or Ra)
Posted by Marcel van der Steen in Explanation 8 Comments»This article looks in detail at the CRI. What is meant with it, is it a good measure, what does it mean in practical terms and how is the relation with LEDs that are penetrating the market more and more?
These are a number of questions that will be dealt with, in this article, in a very practical way.

Giving background of BigMama’s light measurements
Posted by Marcel van der Steen in Explanation No Comments»This article explains some general items mentioned in the light bulb measurement articles. Hope they shed some light in the darkness.
Lighting is important in people’s life. It can build a certain atmosphere or break it if not adequate. It can perform well in a working environment or it can totally fail in supporting it when not chosen well Also, it is an important energy consumer when considering halogen and incandescent lamps. Replacers are available, as this overview shows. Note that this is THE source for reliable information about light and light bulb parameters. OliNo performs independent light bulb measurements and publishing and publishes this information on this website for everybody to see.
So now you can save energy and find a good replacer for your energy wasting halogen and incandescent lamps. You can filter on efficacy, beam angle, light output and fitting type to facilitate your choice needed for your specific application.
If your lamp is not yet in the list, we can measure the lamp for your.
This article gives an overview of the lamps that are measured on different lamp parameters. One can look through the table given in this article for a small number of characteristics and a picture of the lamp. Clicking on the link brings you to the respective article.
After seven months of work, from Feb 2008 to Aug 2008, she is finally born: BigMama! And it is her enabling OliNo to position accurately and repetitively the lamps that need to be measured. Together with some important other measurement tool this forms a flexible and fully automated test environment where a lot of interesting lamp parameters are measured.
